Regarded more as artists than furniture makers, the father-son duo of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne occupy the top tier of American mid-century modern interior design. Father Philip (1907-1987) and son Philip (1937-) were both classically trained at the world renowned Art Students League of New York and opened their first joint showroom in Manhattan in the 1950's, specializing in studio-made metal furniture. This impressive "Kang Tao" table is part of their highly regarded "Historical Civilzation Series", the LaVerne's homage to ancient artisans of the distant past. Cast in pewter and bronze and then engraved with a sprawling, emotive Chinoiserie scene, the experimental LaVerne's then physically buried the table in a specially formulated soil mixture which would jump start the patina process, giving each piece a totally unique appearance showing off beautiful hues of blue, green, orange, and red. Due to this process, truly no two pieces from this series are the same. Originally commissioned for a home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, this table still maintains it's original maker's tag.
